SEMACRET researchers, Prof. Pertti Sarala (Univ. of Oulu) and researcher Saara Österberg (Univ. of Eastern Finland) participated in the traditional spring market in Savukoski in Lapland, Finland. The market is an important community gathering for the local population and reindeer herders.

The region is also known as “Ear fell” due to the distinctive profile of Korvatunturi mountain and for being the legendary home of Santa Claus. Our researchers presented the project and interacted with the local community and reindeer herders to gather their thoughts, concerns and expectations related with the exploration for critical minerals in the Akanvaara prospect, one of the SEMACRET reference sites.

Local people’s views on mineral exploration in their home areas are a key component for social sustainability. SEMACRET is working so that local communities are rightfully informed on research activities happening in their region, as well as to explain the value this research plays to achieve a green energy transition.
